The JullDent Heister Mouth Gag is a self-retaining device that can be used to keep the mouth open on one side. Therefore, it prevents reflex closure of the jaws in cases of trismus or during anesthesia of oral and dental surgeries, like glossectomy and palate surgery. The gag provides a direct line of sight for the surgeon and also prevents life-threatening airway obstruction. The overall length of the device is 13 cm and it consists of two flat prongs that are opened using an oval screw handle. The tips of the prongs are serrated to offer enhanced holds when they are placed between the teeth. Rotating the screw handle will increase the distance between the distal ends of the prongs and push the teeth apart. The self-retaining mechanism allows the surgeon’s hands to be free for more crucial procedures during the operation, and the handle is rotated in the opposite direction to close the prongs and remove the instrument after the procedure.
